+++ This bug was initially created as a clone of Bug #742419 +++

The lock icon in Nightly is shifted too far up. It seems to be aligned with the top of the ascent of the text. IMO, it would look better if the lock were centered between the baseline and the cap height of the text.

See the attached screenshot.

Actually, the problem could be that the text is too low. See this screenshot.
This bug can also be fixed by fixing bug 747608.

The alignment is also off in the non-EV case, so I don't think bug 747608 will help.

I noticed that the search box also has this problem, but all the icons seen to be vertically centered.

Therefore, I think this bug should be re-summarized to "the text in the location bar and in the search box is too low." I suspect the problem is that the text is being centered according to the median or the midpoint between the top of the ascenders and the bottom of the decenders, and/or that when we have to round up or down, we always around down positionally. IMO, the text should be vertically centered in the box according to the midpoint between the cap height and the baseline, and we should always round up.

Notice, for example, that the descenders of the text are almost touching the bottom of the location bar (and search box), but there's plenty of room above the text. This makes some letters like "g" and "y" harder to distinguish than necessary.

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Typeface#Font_metrics for help with the typography terminology I'm using.

Note that I'm running Windows on the 125% / "Medium" / 120 DPI setting.

Brian, none of your screenshots uses the default font size in the URL bar. Even your URL bar looks as tall as the back button. Correct me if I am wrong. Everything looks perfect here.

I am using the default Firefox settings. But, I have my Windows settings set at 125% / Medium / 96 DPI because the default Firefox font is too small; I filed bug 748029 about that. I have retitled this bug.
Summary: Lock icon in identity block is a little too high → Location bar and search bar text is positioned too low when the system has font size set to Medium / 96 DPI / 125%
No longer blocks: 742419
