Details

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64) AppleWebKit/535.11 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/17.0.963.79 Safari/535.11

Steps to reproduce:

I've been following the Boot2Gecko project with interest, and I'm excited that we have the possibility of a Web-focused touch OS. I'm excited that it exists and I believe it has a chance to change the mobile software landscape in entirely wonderful ways.

Actual results:

The name does not reflect in any way how wonderful this project is.

At best, it is a very specific and technical description of what the OS does -- it boots a device directly into the Gecko layout engine. Yay. But there is a diminishingly small percentage of potential users who will understand what that even means. Even for those who do, is it really what they care about?

At worst, the name sounds like somebody killing a lizard by stomping on it.

Expected results:

Mozilla's got a lot of smart and talented people who do a great job designing and launching products. Products like Firefox and Thunderbird have great, concrete names that are recognizable to millions.

It would really be worth some time while the project is still in it's early- to medium-timeframe development to give the project a name that communicates how excited your team is about the possibilities. I think this is a world-changing project -- it deserves a name that lives up to the potential of the software.
Thanks for your bug report. I think you'll find many of us agree with the sentiment and I'm sure something will be done sooner or later. But alas, in terms of code changes, "needs a new name" is not a very actionable report, so I'm closing this as invalid.

I forgot to mention that the abbreviation "B2G" wanders into the Web business namespace where "B2B" and "B2C" are established terms of art (for business-to-business and business-to-consumer, respectively).
@philikon: what's the best place to register this kind of point, then? I was told that Bugzilla was where it should go.
