Firefox doesn't know how to open this address, because the protocol (irc) isn't associated with any program

Expected results:

x-scheme-handler/irc=xchat.desktop;
x-scheme-handler/ircs=xchat.desktop;
set while working on bug 748643
also /usr/share/gconf/schemas/apps_xchat_url_handler.schemas exists and is pasted in said bug.

External handler support seems important even for mobile targeted stuff. (even more important cause copy-paste can be harder)
