The bookmarks bar should be visible.

can you reproduce in safe mode?
http://support.mozilla.org/kb/safe+mode

do you see the button if you enable the bookmarks toolbar? Is this a regression compared to a previous version you were running on the same exact system (cause maybe are are not properly detecting an hidden menubar on Unity)?
Yep, I still don't see the bookmarks button in safe mode. With regards to Unity, I will test on Windows 7 soon.
The bug only seems to appear on Ubuntu.
So, looks like this is a mixture of bug 619899 and bug 513159.
On Unity there are various modes the menubar can work: as a common window menubar, as a panel menubar and disappear on maximized windows. Looks like we just still don't support the Unity detached menubar correctly.
But it worked on earlier Firefox versions...
Sorry, I don't have a Unity install locally, cc-ing Tim who just upgraded his Ubuntu distro, maybe he can help figuring out if it's an unwanted regression
I can confirm the behavior on Ubuntu 12.04. The Bookmark button is not displayed in the navigation or bookmark bar. Selecting Customize (with the dialog open) displays the button.

But I can also reproduce this in Firefox 4.0.1 so this seems to be an old issue (didn't search for duplicates). Michael, do you see this issue in any Firefox newer than 4 and older than 12?
I'm seeing this on Aurora as well.
Aurora is currently F14. Same issue reported in bug 754942? Reported as a regression since 13, 14 there, if I understand correctly.
It’s because the menu bar is visible. Duplicate of bug 631330 and/or bug 581238.
