In Mac OS X Lion when pressing and holding a key, a menu is displayed with alternative characters for the key pressed. Eg. pressing and holding A will make a dialog appear with all the following alternatives: àáâäæãåā. To select either of them, the keyboard number that appears below each of the alternative characters needs to be pressed. Chrome/Safari and other applications make use of this OS feature. Firefox just kicks into repeating the key that's been pressed.
