This still isn't perfect, but it cuts down on the number of findById calls we need to do, and it makes things more readable IMO.

I moved all this code around. These are run on a per-list basis now so I think most of this is uneeded, but margaret can decide.

I've totally lost context for this patch, and the code has changed around anyway, so let's just close this bug.
