Attached image Current L10n icon
Attached is the current logo used on mozilla.org for L10n. I would like to see a sleaker, sexier icon that is identifiable, unifying, and unique. Specifically we would use it on mozilla.org, our wiki pages, and potentially on swag (similar to what ReMo does).
This is potentially a pretty big project. Can you share a bit more about what you have in mind? As in, what you'd like this to represent and what your expectations are around timing? (on that note, realistically it's going to be tough to get to this in Q2)
I would like to see this done before MozCamps later this year so that we can distribute swag with the icon printed on it.

As for what I have in mind, the message I want this to represent is Mozilla loves languages. The current design's message seems to be more international and outside of a Mozilla context, it would be unidentified as representing Mozilla or the language localization teams that help Mozilla products expand globally.

In addition to changing the message the current icon to represent, the current icon is too busy and complicated, with all of the colors and many flags. I would like for us to have a sleaker and simplified design.
I spoke with Lee Tom and he recommended a wordmark similar to the Mozilla Labs wordmark. I, personally, really like that idea, as it opens opportunities for l10n teams to use the wordmark with their community's icon when printing or promoting their l10n efforts (making it "localizable"). In addition, it gives us flexibility in design for any future 110n swag we may want to design and distribute at events and to contributors.

Hi Tara,

Now that this has been assigned a priority, is there a timeline to completion for this project? I'd like to begin using this by the end of the quarter if possible.

Thanks
Hey there, Jeff. I'm attaching a vector file of the Mozilla l10n wordmark here.
Let me know if you have any questions. Lee

Hey Lee,

This looks fantastic! I'm sending out an email to the rest of the l10n team to get their feedback. Once I've heard back, can we get the icon in a more universal format, like png or gif please?

Thanks,
Jeff
I can create a transparent GIF for you (in white and dark grey) to accommodate different backgrounds. Just let me know the dimensions. Thanks!

Perfect! We're all meeting tomorrow morning, so I'll get everyone's feedback then and let you know. Thanks again!
Great, Jeff. To be clear, this wordmark is derived from the tiered branding system our team has established in our brand tool kit, so it's unlikely we'll vary elements from what you've seen this morning.

Thanks for adding that. I'll make that clear in the meeting tomorrow and refer to the page you sent me.
Hey Lee,

Feedback was very positive! It looks like we're ready to start using it. As far as dimensions go, we are hoping to use this in a very general sense (e.g., on l10n.mozilla.org, on swag, as the profile picture on a Twitter feed, as the title slide on a slide deck, on business cards, etc.), so I'm not exactly sure what dimensions to give you.

Most immediately, we will be using it for Twitter/YouTube profile pictures and on our wiki pages. If I could get one gif of the wordmark against a black (or white) background for the profiles (no larger than 700k please) and then another transparent gif for the wiki pages (400 × 180 pixels), that would be great! If we needed other dimensions in the future, do we just shoot you an email?

Thanks Lee!
Fantastic news, Jeff. I'm very happy that your team likes it. I built out several versions here, based on your specs above. http://cl.ly/1t1g0g3e3F3v

I also included the AI file in case you need to build out more. If you need any more help, feel free to let us know.
Can you clarify the licensing? Do we need to do anything special, say usage on the wiki is https://wiki.mozilla.org/MozillaWiki:About, on elmo the code is MPL2, the site itself has our standard CC license linking to http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/about/legal.html#site
Hi Axel, unfortunately we're not able to speak to the licensing details on this. I'd recommend pinging Liz (from legal) she will be able to help answer your questions.

If you don't mind I'm going to close this out since the design portion is complete. but if you have any questions or issues please don't hesitate to ping or re-open.
