Knowing the exact bug that caused the regression might help in moving forward.

bug 496653 looks the closest to what possibly could be causing this, the regression window provided in comment 0. Who takes a look at regressionwindow-wanted bugs?

Anyone can find a regression range, no one in particular owns driving the list down to zero (though lots of great contributors monitor the list, most aren't linux users).

The regression range is too far back to narrow down via mozregression. Realistically, unless someone is willing to build locally to test this (and even that may or may not work at this point given various toolchain changes over the last 3 years), it's unlikely to be further narrowed down than it already is.
That said, agreed that bug 496653 looks like a plausible candidate in that range. What do you think, Martin?

Hm, I have my own build of Trunk (nightly) and also downloaded mozilla nightly (44a1) but everywhere is the correct icon (blue globe). I don't see the Firefox anywhere. Although I run Fedora 22. May be something Ubuntu specific?

I see...I can reproduce that in gnome-shell, MATE works ok.

I failed to reproduce this issue with the latest Nightly Build in Arch Linux and GNOME 3.
Is this bug still affecting current builds of Nightly?

This issue is still reproducible with both latest Developer Edition 47.0a2 and Nightly 48.0a1 (from 2016-03-13), under 3 different Ubuntu machines [1] - please see the attached screenshot.
Also tried by creating a .desktop file as mentioned here [2], but the output is the same - the Firefox release icon is still displayed.
[1] 12.04 x86, 14.04 x86 and 12.04 x64

This is old enough that I'm just going to assume it's invalid - it can be re-opened or refiled if it makes sense to.
