We're working on localizing the Get Involved page into Spanish and Portuguese so we can reach out directly to potential contributors in LATAM (see bug 755351 for more). When those pages are ready, it would be great to get the word out about this in the appropriate PT and ES channels. One thought was as a snippet and Carmen said this might also work in Facebook and Twitter. We ran an English Get Involved page snippet in 2009 and used the following text: "There are many ways to get involved with Mozilla. You don’t have to be a C++ guru (or even know what that means!)" I'd be happy to have Matej take a pass at this to refine the wording or come up with a whole different way to approach this. Considering that this could be reused on Facebook and Twitter, it would be great if the copy was also 140 characters or less if that is possible (or maybe we could do a longer version and a shorter version?) Would it be possible to set the copy deadline as June 26 to get things queued up for going live in Q3? I'm also copying people involved in localizing those pages so they can give us feedback about how any of this copy would work in ES and PT.
In Spanish that would be: "Hay muchas formas de colaborar con Mozilla. No tienes que ser un gurú de C++ (¡ni siquiera saber lo que significa!)." I would suggest to change it a bit to get more attention, maybe adding a "Discover how" or similar. What we see with newcomers is that at the beginning they don't ask how to contribute because: * They think it's just technical things. * They think there is big commitment (strict deadlines) or big experience required. * They think you need to invest a lot of time. So we have to show people that they can contribute in an area/project they love and investing the time they have, like a hobby.
I'm on it. June 26 sounds good. I'll ping if I have any questions.
Hi all, here are some options for this. I wanted to provide a range because I wasn't sure what would work in each language. If there's something that fits in these lines, great. Otherwise, let's use them as a jumping off point to discuss and revise: Help Mozilla build a better Web. We're always looking for volunteers in a number of different areas. Get started. You don’t have to know how to code to get involved with Mozilla. Learn more about our volunteer opportunities. If you’re reading this, chances are you’re interested in the future of the Web. Mozilla needs volunteers just like you! To find out if you have what it takes to volunteer with Mozilla, please answer the following question: Do you love the Web?
For Spanish I think that maybe this one would fit: "You don’t have to know how to code to get involved with Mozilla. Learn more about our volunteer opportunities. " "No necesitas saber programar para colaborar con Mozilla. Descubre más sobre las oportunidades de participación."
Nukeador, thanks for your feedback. Marcelo or Fernando, any thoughts on what would work for PT?
I like the second and third ones: You don’t have to know how to code to get involved with Mozilla. Learn more about our volunteer opportunities. Você não precisa saber programar para colaborar com a Mozilla. Saiba mais sobre nossas oportunidades de voluntariado. If you’re reading this, chances are you’re interested in the future of the Web. Mozilla needs volunteers just like you! Se você está lendo isto, são grandes as chances de você estar interessado no futuro da web. A Mozilla precisa de voluntários como você!
Thanks Fernando. Since it looks like the following works well in both ES and PT, I vote for going with this one: "You don’t have to know how to code to get involved with Mozilla. Learn more about our volunteer opportunities." Plus it looks like we've already got the localized text for this in both ES and PT too :)
In terms of closing this out, who makes the final call on text for the snippets?
(In reply to David Boswell from comment #8) > In terms of closing this out, who makes the final call on text for the > snippets? That would be you, as product/project owner. :) Now, all we need is a projected launch date for the pages, and then you can send to me and Winston the who, what, when, where and whys :)
(In reply to Carmen from comment #9) > That would be you, as product/project owner. :) Ah, great :) Here is the final snippet text for each locale: EN You don’t have to know how to code to get involved with Mozilla. Learn more about our volunteer opportunities. PT-br Você não precisa saber programar para colaborar com a Mozilla. Saiba mais sobre nossas oportunidades de voluntariado. ES No necesitas saber programar para colaborar con Mozilla. Descubre más sobre las oportunidades de participación. > Now, all we need is a projected launch date for the pages, and then you can > send to me and Winston the who, what, when, where and whys :) OK, great. The projected launch date is mid-July. I'll follow up with you and Winston again in early July to finalize the details. Thanks.

Updating this bug to reflect that the ES, FR and NL Get Involved pages are live and we can now create snippets to promote them. https://www.mozilla.org/es-ES/contribute/ https://www.mozilla.org/fr/contribute/ https://www.mozilla.org/nl/contribute/ We have the localized snippet text for ES in comment #10. I'm cc'ing pascal and tonnes for their help localizing this into FR and NL as well. It sounds like we may be able to have these go live in March after MWC. I'll follow up with Winston on timing.

Summary: Create snippet text for localized Spanish and Portuguese Get Involved pages → Create snippet text for localized Spanish, Dutch and French Get Involved pages
Thanks. I think we can use this: NL U hoeft niet te weten hoe u moet programmeren om met Mozilla mee te doen. Lees meer over onze mogelijkheden voor vrijwilligers. This is a close match to English, the other locales and the existing nl page text/header. Cc’ing Tim for heads-up.

It is ok with me. Ton isn't better to use the word 'betrokken' ipv 'meedoen'?

Since the text of the snippet is neutral and can be reused in the future, I am going to put it for translation in our snippets.lang file on mozilla.org, this way it is at the same place as other snippets we have on about:home and we can get all locales to translte it in advance.
David, Matej, can you indicate which part of the snippet is going to be the link?
(In reply to Tim Maks van den Broek from comment #13) > > It is ok with me. Ton isn't better to use the word 'betrokken' ipv 'meedoen'? Good point, I’ve been struggling with this (once again). It seems we’ve been trying to avoid/eliminate the word(s) ‘betrokken (raken)’ before. Strictly spoken, getting involved is ‘betrokken raken’ allright, but as with ‘contribute’ (bijdragen -> meewerken - see main.lang), I think this is a very context dependant string for nl. Sidenote: try Google Translate; it says ‘betrokken’ for ‘involved’, but ‘hoe kunt u meedoen’ for ‘how to get involved’. What I meant with ‘page header’ above was supposed to be ‘page title’; it starts with ‘Get involved’ where we’ve already been using ‘Meewerken’ as well, hence the note. We also tend to use both ‘meewerken’ and ‘meedoen’ for this, but I used ‘meedoen’ here as in the top line, though ‘meewerken’ would be the better one. If you prefer to use ‘betrokken’, that’s fine with me, but maybe we should also change the title, or change that to use ‘meedoen’, or (rather) change both the snippet and top line to use ‘meehelpen’? (I know, we don’t have to be too consistent, but still…) It just feels like ‘betrokken raken’ in Dutch is something that may overcome a person unintentionally, which is not very likely to reflect Mozilla’s intensions. Note that (now we’re at it) there are 4 occurrences of ‘betrokken (te) raken’ in the email replies, so they might need to get changed as well. Apparently (but I might be wrong), ES and PT have a similar problem, as they use ‘callaborate’. I’m eager to find out what Pascal will come up with. ;)
For French, unlike other latin-based languages do, we usually avoid using the word 'collaborer' as this word can have a negative meaning in French for historical reasons. Usually we use the word "Participer" in French but we often change of word depending on the context of the translation, we could also say "s'impliquer" and in the context of this string, we could maybe even use 'aider' (help).
(In reply to Pascal Chevrel:pascalc from comment #15) > David, Matej, can you indicate which part of the snippet is going to be the > link? It will either be just "learn more" or the entire second line: "Learn more about our volunteer opportunities." David, what do you think is better?
Pascal, thanks for putting this snippet text in for general localization. It would be great to have this ready to go for whenever new localizations of the page come online. > It will either be just "learn more" or the entire second line: "Learn more > about our volunteer opportunities." I like going with the entire second line. The bigger target the better :) Completely off-topic, but it would be great to have the whole snippet area be clickable.
The string is in snippets.lang, can you guys put your translations on svn? Thanks
Done. Also used ‘meewerken’ in contribute.lang as mentioned in comment 16. Email replies were left untouched.
Thanks Ton :)
Hi awesome people, Spanish snippet has just been committed to svn. Best,
es-AR snippet commited too
Checking in on this. What's the status? It looks like we might be able to mark it resolved? Thanks! Jennifer
The bug asked for Spanish, Dutch and French. We have that snippets in those languages plus 60 more now, we can indeed close the bug :)
