There's been lots of talk about applications' need to know performance characteristics of the host. Also, there's been agreement that benchmarking was the only way to go. Up for debate is how much the browser can/should help there; but at least, a good part of the work is the same regardless of the approach we take there: the first step is to develop some good WebGL benchmarks.
We have a framework for WebGL performance tests:

There currently are only performance regression tests there, but the framework would work well also for more involved benchmarks.
