When I click an item in the downloads panel, there is no immediate feedback. If the item doesn't start up quickly (e.g., an install executable), I can't tell if it actually started or not. So I just have to wait, or else click again, and then maybe start it two or more times. This is pretty annoying.

Good point, the program might take some time to start.

Stephen, do you see any way to provide a better visual indication that the click
is being handled? Maybe we can also consider to disable further clicks for a
short time, while the visual indication or transition is shown.

I kind of expect the downloads panel to disappear when choosing an item from it, because it looks like a popup menu.
There's no feedback in the old UI as well, indeed I keep hitting this into it. This would be good to have but not blocking the feature since it's unfortunately an already existing problem.
we are currently closing the panel as stated in comment 2.
