Most probably you did an update from Thunderbird 12 to Thunderbird 13. Now you need to update Lightning too. You can
a) wait until Thunderbird automatically downloads the update or
b) open Tools > Add-ons > Extensions and manually start the update search or
c) manually download and install Lightning from addons.mozilla.org

I have Thunderbird 13, I followed your instructions and in the list of Extensions it states that Lightning is incompatible with Thunderbird 13.0.1 and that Lightning 1.4 is disabled.

This is what I expected. Now choose between a), b) or c) to update to Lightning 1.5.
