Technical documentation is at https://developer.mozilla.org/en/Thunderbird/Filelink_Providers. We are making a dropbox extension , that you can use as an example see bug 763471.

I think we would LOVE to get feedback on what's missing in our documentation for people to add other filelink provider (be it your own).
