new message alert doesn't disappear

Details
User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:13.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/13.0.1
Build ID: 20120614114901
Steps to reproduce:
message alerting is enabled on my TBird 13.0.1 [fully updated at time of filing bug]
With prior versions, the pop up would appear, and then drop away. Now, the behavior is either irregular, or not useful.
Actual results:
Now, the pop up alert stays, and will not slide away after some measured seconds. Also, even if I select the newly arrived mail within TBird, that popup does not disappear. Also, sometimes, when I click on the mail, as described within the popup, I can bring up the mail, but the box still lingers.
Often, the only way to make it disappear, now, is to manually click on that boxes close button
Expected results:
If the alert appears, it should go away after measured seconds.
It should also disappear if one clicks on the message info in that box, or if one selects the new message within TBird.
I recall these alternatives as default behavior in prior versions.

See bug 425042 comment 1.
That is similar behavior, except:
a) his was version 2 of TBird.
b) his alert box would stick even after closing TBird, which I haven't noticed.
c) I can manually close the alert box.
Yet, the behavior is not consistent. Alerts do slide away, as expected; I haven't yet isolated out why the behavior returns as expected, or what brings on the unexpected behavior -- extended sleep/awake cycles? TBird open a long time? Something about the display in the alert {they always seem filled with large comments, on reflection, when they stick in error}. Could it be restart of the machine, or TBird that cures it ? Don't know.
But I'm keeping a look out.

I have the same problem on a Windows 2003 Server virtual machine, accessed over remotedesktop - maybe that is important.
I am watching this for months now (it is still the same for TB 16.0.2) without finding any relationships to anything I do or to the mails arrived...
It happens once or twice a day - the popup stays open, correctly showing one or more new emails and I can only close it by clicking the small X or by closing TB. Clicking in the notification window correctly jumps to the corresponding email, but the popup stays open.
Most of the time it works ok, dimming in and out, even over remotedesktop. Sometimes TB hangs when I am writing email text and the notification popup appears. I then have to wait several seconds before I can continue typing.
I have now disabled the sound alert to see if it happens again.

It just happened again with sound alert disabled. It is also likely not related to filters because it happend for a mail that wasn't moved anywhere and stayed in the inbox (imap).
Is there any way to investigate this further? Debug-Logs? Some monitoring tool?

The first place to look is in the Thunderbird error console; most problems don't show up there, but it's easy to check so it's worth a look: Tools / Error Console or control-shift-j to display the error console.
If you are willing to run a debug build of Thunderbird, we might see some useful information in the output. If you want to do that, let us know and we'll create a debug build for you.

@irving: in order not to spam these comments with a conversation about how to get a debug build to work and what to do with it, I tried to contact you by email, but didn't get a response...
The error console doesn't show anything at the time the problem occurs.
Yes, if it's easy to do and doesn't hurt, I am willing to help by running a debug build. I hope it is only about exchanging the .exe file? You can contact me by email or several instant messengers.

Irving told me, he has no time to help me with this - anyone else? :)

This issue still annoys me day by day, with TB 17.0.8.
I still think it could be related to accessing TB over RDP. From other projects I know that screen operations can raise exceptions when using RDP over a slow or disconnected connection. In normal local mode, those would never happen. So, when this exception aborts some method which would later create the timer, this could be an explanation.

Wayne....If you mean me, on the debug thing, I can't say much more than I would look it up, but that is not very helpful -- my apologies to you, Moritz
On another note, I am now on a Win8 laptop, using 17.0.8, and I don't notice the defect anymore. Re Moritz's last note: My internet has also been relatively stable, of late, so timing and d/l delays due to connections aren't an issue.
At least, I can't remember lately clicking off a slide in. While it had gotten to the point, a while back, that it was an automatic mindless thing, to click and close the box now/then, I am nearly sure it I haven't noticed it lately. The Win8 is on a new laptop, installed a month or two ago, and may explain this; i have no way to test that thought.

Some new info, maybe it helps: I switched TB to SafeMode and it still happened multiple times today. So, at least it is not caused by any addons or what else SafeMode does...

Good news! Since that recent update a few weeks ago (which also changed the design of the alert), the problem didn't happen anymore! Can someone prove this by finding the related change?

The only change in 24.x related to the alert time I'm aware of is bug 856451 to make the respective setting available in the options dialog for the alert customization. I don't think this has changed anything in the backend for creating that alert, though.

It didn't happen anymore and from my side, this issue can be closed.
