The current IRC icon in Thunderbird really doesn't make me think of IRC. :) The two bubbles is also confusingly similar to the "three bubbles" icon used to represent a chat in general. Unfortunately there's no "official" IRC icon (and most of the ones out there I haven't been a fan of). But something a bit different here seems like it would be beneficial. http://mxr.mozilla.org/comm-central/source/chat/protocols/irc/icons/prpl-irc-48.png http://mxr.mozilla.org/comm-central/source/chat/themes/chat-16.png
Maybe a speech bubble with a "#" inside? That's the closest I can think of to an IRC-like symbol.
That could work, and it also seems to be the most common that pops up when doing a Google Images search for "irc icon" https://www.google.com/search?q=irc+icon&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:unofficial&client=firefox-a&um=1&ie=UTF-8&hl=en&tbm=isch&source=og&sa=N&tab=wi&ei=7YLxT_n8CcqS-wbmrZ2vAw&biw=1366&bih=648&sei=84LxT-7DHIPd4QTHmPzQDQ

Sounds good to me! Icon coming.
