What is actually Participants in this case? People who have tweeted recently? I'm following 103 people, but I only see 53 in the participant list.
A "participant" in this case is anyone who has shown up in your timeline, yes. There's an Instantbird bug [1] open to add all followed people as participants in the timeline. This should be fairly easy to do, it just requires another API request to Twitter when we first come online (that bug has some more technical details). This bug in it's current form doesn't really really seem "actionable" though. [1] https://bugzilla.instantbird.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1038

Bug 1445778 removed support for Twitter.
