Hi there. I'm not sure if this is the right place to file this bug, but I"d really appreciate your help. For the upcoming Olympics campaign we're designing a set of new Theme designs (formerly Personas) and these are based on country flags. I realize that country flags don't always unify people when there are certain political sensitivities, and I want to respect that and avoid any issues. I realize this is the case with my own country (Iran) and wanted to be sure we avoid this in other locales as best possible. So, I was hoping to file this bug and share the designs with you so you can flag potential issues. If there is a symbol (for example) that is controversial, perhaps we can remove it and resort to the flag colors, etc. Thanks in advance for your help. The aim is to have the designs done and uploaded into AMO by July 18th/19th.

This bug is great! Thanks for filing it Tara. Once you've attached the designs, I would also recommend sending an email with a link to this bug through the world ready mailing list to get the community's feedback.
Thanks :) what's the best way of handling this so it doesn't become too chaotic? Can I open up a google Doc with the designs and share that so it's updated live vs. attaching all of them one by one? Please let me know.
I think a Google Doc could be just fine. The main items to point out in your email are these: 1) Establish a timeline for giving feedback. 2) Identify the target audience represented by each flag and be specific. That will better help them to identify any potentially controversial issues with each flag choice. 3) Define how they are to provide you with feedback (e.g., by replying through the mailing list, as comments on this bug, etc.?) This should help you define the terms of the feedback without it getting too chaotic. Hope that helps!

Italy is ok.
For Germany, I'd prefer something less Preussian. We're using the colors of the flag only recently, and in rather creative combinations. I think that something that looks more like bodypaint-on-cheek would work much better. Maybe also check http://www.dosb.de/en/organisation/philosophie/dosb-profile/ for reference, there's just a dash of black-red-gold in the logo.

I haven't seen any fan-art similar to this for the EURO cup just a few weeks ago, thus I assume that it's not going to resonate strongly here. I'm not confident about suggesting something, because I wouldn't know how that looks on Windows, which is likely the primary exposure window. For color schemes, there's a picture of the german dress code on http://www.dosb.de/de/olympia/olympische-news/detail/news/-886968beab/. I guess the solid black background is the obvious turn-away for me.
Uhm... Axel made me think about the background actually. I didn't look at all the nation images before and thought the green background was common. I'm noticing now that it isn't so I'd like to reconsider for Italy. While our flag colours are green, white and red; the colour for all things related to sports has always been light blue (something in between blue and light blue actually, you can have a look here: https://www.google.com/search?q=maglia+italia&um=1&ie=UTF-8&hl=en&tbm=isch&source=og&sa=N&tab=wi&ei=FQv-T7KFE6am4gT07PzfBg&biw=1280&bih=609&sei=Fwv-T5G8KqXg4QSs5dD2Bg ) so it would be really nice to have that color as a background instead of the green; first because it won't clash with the green on the flag and second because if you say Italy and sport you think about blue, and nothing else.

sorry I keep calling them "Personas" out of habit. This batch includes: * Iran * Columbia * Egypt Fwiw, I've already asked to edit the Iran flag to have the symbol removed and have approved it.
Previewing the theme on Firefox, for the Spain one I noticed that: * Coat of arms is cropped on top and bottom. Firefox by default doesn't show the bookmark bar and the theme doesn't cover the title bar. * Background for lower addon-bar is yellow, and maybe it should be red, since it's the main identity colour. * If you display the bookmark bar, you get a lot of red on bottom, getting wrong proportions for flag colour, where the yellow band should have twice the heigh of the red band. * If the window is not maximized the image is more cropped from the top, displaying the yellow band on the top.
For France my feedback is: * The thumbnail is not the flag of France, at least no Frenchman would recognize it because of the lack of the blue stripe: http://www.getpersonas.com/en-US/gallery/Designer/mozthemes * The 3 stripes (blue, white, red) should have the same proportions * If you activate the addons bar or the search bar at the bottom, the stripes in the header and the footer don't have the same proportions (which shouldn't happen if the 3 stripes had the same proportions)
Belgium looks nice overall ! I'm a little concerned though that if you reduce the window enough, the black part disappears. The same problem happens in the thumbnail where you only see yellow and red and may think of Spain instead. I think there would be no problem giving the stripes an angle like you did on several other flags (Italy comes to mind), or even a curve like you can see on http://www.olympic.be/ (both the logo and the athletes wear curved stripes). People are used to see the flag "remixed" in various ways (see for example the favicon on http://www.belgium.be/), so as long as the colors are in the right order (not to be confused with Germany) it should be ok. If you have to repeat the background color after the red stripe, it may be better to use white there for this very reason.
Hey all Thank you so much for your input. I appreciate the sensitivities around flags, however we should also appreciate the challenge here in designing a persona/theme that captures the essence of the flag, has some artistic edge to it, and also looks well in the new UI - across platforms, etc. We're doing our best and while I hope to address most concerns, we unfortunately can't tweak each flag based on personal preferences or edge cases. We'll do our best, but just wanted to set expectations as we've got a tight timeline and tight resources (as usual). A few additional points to keep in mind is that for these designs we were avoiding a very dry "template" look. Meaning that instead of having a full flag pasted to the top right, and squished into the narrow field for default settings, what we've done here is more of an inspiration of the flags (while maintaining the integrity of it and the core elements of course). And given the new UI, there are a lot of factors to consider. So, unless there are major issues with how a symbol or color is represented I'd ask that we please look at these with a little more flexibility vs. looking to replicate the exact flag. For me, personally, if I were to apply an "Iran" theme... I not only would prefer to not have the symbol and focus on the colors, but am okay as long as it's the right mix and order of colors. Each flag is different, but it's more of an artistic interpretation than an exact replica. Imagine you're painting your face to go to the games (which I've done!) Some people paint the exact flag on a cheek, some people just take those same colors and apply a little more creativity. That's how I see it, except that I'm painting the "face" of my browser. I agree it looks weird. Regarding the black going away at smaller window sizes. I see that too, though I think that perhaps that's an edge case since (I would imagine) not that many people have their browser window *that* small. If the persona designs were responsive, that'd be better :) but sadly they're not. If it's a huge issue, we can try the alternate orientation, like you suggested. Though I personally liked this :) It's the same with the French Theme. The remixes are cool, but again I'd like to avoid a lot of remixing...and treating each flag with the same family of filters and treatments.

I think the USA flag/theme is a good example: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/united-states-of-america/ I think that's a great design, but obviously with certain settings, the number of stripes and stars get cropped. There's simply nothing we can do about that if we want to keep a more inspired /artistic design... but no one will doubt that this is the American Flag. Just sharing :)

You can find the full story in Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese_Taipei --- But my personal opinion: I think using either this one or Chinese Taipei Olympic flag should be both okay.

@Konstantin I'll do my best to offer an alternative. A lot of the designs have this (or a similar approach) taking inspiration from the colors etc and providing something a little more abstract than the actual flag. But I've asked the designers to offer an alternative similar to your suggestion if it's an issue. @Percy thank you very much! Great thing is that these themes are not limited to the Olympics... they can be used any time :)
