Topic: Privacy-Preserving Targeted Advertising Presenter: Jonathan Mayer Date: 2012-07-25 Time: 12:00PM UTC-8 Duration: 1 Hour Audience: Public Air Mozilla: Yes Dial-in: Yes Archive: Yes Member of IT to help with A/V: Yes Description: Jonathan will present a mechanism for privacy-preserving targeted advertising. We'd like a public archive and the usual streaming for a presentation. Jonathan is a researcher at Stanford University and will be presenting published work. I'm waiting on a summary for the talk and specifics about the speaker's presentation format (but it should be pretty standard).
Please review the contents of this bug and decide if this event may be streamed publicly on Air Mozilla. PR please add "PR+" to the whiteboard field to indicate approval. Steering Committee members please add "SC+" to the whiteboard field to indicate approval.

Stan, You need to chase down dsicore for a permissions review before we can air this publicly.

Hey Richard, I'll do what I can. FWIW, this speaker is not representing Mozilla or our point of view and is presenting *already public* work.

I'm not the right person to review a presentation on privacy. Changing to Harvey Anderson. Also, I share Sid's concerns.
(In reply to Shannon Prior from comment #4) Shannon, Sorry, that's probably my fault! There are 3 spriors in bugzilla, I must have grabbed the wrong one. The UI isn't exactly user friendly.

Jonathan sent me a talk description, updating the title of this bug accordingly. Title: "Tracking Not Required: Privacy-Preserving Third-Party Web Services" Abstract: "Do Not Track is seemingly approaching an impasse. Policymakers, public interest groups, and researchers call for an effective control on collection of a user's browsing history. Advertising companies, analytics services, social networks, and other third parties are unwilling to yield their current business practices. "But there is scope for compromise: functional third-party services that do not track users. This talk explains how to build such services with a set of engineering primitives and modern web technology. Examples include advertisement frequency capping, behavioral personalization, and social sharing. The talk will also survey the market failures that have thwarted privacy-preserving services and suggest how regulators and browser vendors might constructively realign incentives."
