Some users on MozillaZine report that SMTP now longer works in Thunderbird after upgrading to OS X Mountain Lion. I'll have the users give more details here but wanted to get this on the radar ASAP.

(Quoting tonyfirshman's answers to my questions)
> What error messages show in Tools > Activity Manager when this happens?
> What error messages show in Tools > Error Console when this happens?
None
> Does this apply to all SMTP servers?
Yes
> Does it happen for every sent message?
Yes
> Have you tried disabling the OS X firewall temporarily to see if that resolves the issue?
Doesn't help
> What version of Thunderbird are you running? Does it also happen on Alpha/Beta/Nightly builds?
14.0 production
> Does a re-install or new profile of Thunderbird solve the problem?
Download and "re-install" cured. Interestingly both new and old are "14.0". The installation was a drag to Applications, and I got a warning saying the 'new' .app was older.

I would guess this is related to Gatekeeper/Signing (bug 756830) or Thunderbird being put into an OS X sandbox.
To anyone else who can reproduce this, it would be useful to gather the following information so this can be fixed without requiring a re-install:
* What error messages show in Tools > Activity Manager when email won't send?
* What is output when "spctl -a /Applications/Thunderbird.app" is run in Terminal?
* What is output when "xattr -l /Applications/Thunderbird.app" is run in Terminal?
* Make a backup of Thunderbird.app or rename it then re-install Thunderbird. Repeat the last two Terminal commands on the new Thunderbird.app so we can see the differences.
(update the path to Thunderbird.app accordingly)
Regarding to the comments of discussions.apple it also doesn't sometimes work for Apple Mail.

So I think this is more likely an Apple Bug. Have somebody filled a Bug with Apple for this?

This is the last open issue blocking bug 760985. Is it still the concensus that this is/was an Apple bug?

I forget what this bug is all about but I doubt many OS X users are *upgrading* to Mountain Lion at this point so it's probably fine to resolve as WONTFIX/INCOMPLETE.
