Sent to the Mozilla webmaster, regarding the notice bar:

Mozilla Firefox is a free open source software developed by Mozilla Foundation, a non-profit organization. (translated from PL to EN so might not be 100% match).

The problem is word "free" is translated as "wolny" which actually means "slow". I bet you wouldn't like such adjective describing your browser :) This should be translated as "darmowe" or "bezpłatne" - Mozilla Firefox to darmowe oprogramowanie...

"wolne" means both: "free" and "slow"...

Then it would be "free as in free beer" and not "free as in free speech".

The problem with the both meanings of the word "wolne" is known - but there is no known better localization for it to ensure the "free as in free speech" meaning, unfortunately.

Well, in my opinion translation that ALSO means "slow" is very unfortunate with regards to internet browser. Does word "free" refer to software you do not have to pay for?

No i niestety tutaj się mylisz. W tym przypadku „free” oznacza, że nie jest od nikogo uzależnione, a co do znaczenia słowa „wolny”, to polecam lekturę SJP PWN. http://sjp.pwn.pl/lista.php?co=wolne&sourceid=Mozilla-search&od=0

Piszę po polsku, bo nie uważam za słuszne pisanie w języku angielskim o polskim słownictwie i gramatyce. Zgłoszenie dotyczy polskiej lokalizacji i dyskusja powinna toczyć się w tym języku.

OK, dzięki za wyjaśnienie. Znaczenie: darmowy/bezpłatny wydało mi się w tym przypadku najbardziej oczywiste, jednak jeśli chodzi o inne znaczenie słowa "wolny" (nie muszę w tym celu odnosić się do SJP) to może bardziej fortunne będzie użycie słowa "niezależny"?

Rozumiem, że idea "wolnego oprogramowania" jest już na tyle rozpropagowana, że dla spójności zostało użyte takie, a nie inne tłumaczenie. Moje niezrozumienie wynikało z przekonania, że chodzi o bezpłatną aplikację. Nie zmienia to jednak moim zdaniem faktu, że jest ono dość niefortunne w przypadku jakiegokolwiek oprogramowania. Niemniej rozumiem motywację - sprawa zamknięta.
