Today I went to search for correspondence with a particular person, and found that in every To or From field in the search results, the final "e" in the person's name had been replaced by an "s." The plaintext segments were properly quoted; only the To and From fields were modified. Clicking on any of the search results showed a message list in which the From or Recipient field were correctly listed. For example, in the first attached screenshot, I clicked the second result to get the other screenshot.

The screenshots have been modified to remove personal information, where green and blue bars are each obscuring copies of the same information, and grey is used everywhere else. The red circles highlight the name spelling difference.

Any idea why this is?
how is the name spelled in your address book?
Not sure - I don't consciously use the address book. Why would it not just use the spelling of the name from the message itself?

*please* do check.

> Why would it not just use the spelling of the name from the message itself?

because today, it does not work the same as in version 2.
see https://support.mozillamessaging.com/en-US/kb/display-name-message-list-and-message-pane?s=name&as=s
The name has the s in the lookup when I type in the last name in a Compose window. That lookup gives two identical results, which may indicate one from LDAP and one from Address Book.
The "Show only display name for people in my address book" option is unchecked.
If that is what Thunderbird draws on, it should display the s version in the message list after clicking on a search result.
Those two stages of search results should be consistent, in either direction. The fact that they aren't is what leads me to file the bug.
your comment leads me to believe you did not read to the bottom of https://support.mozillamessaging.com/en-US/kb/display-name-message-list-and-message-pane?s=name&as=s where it talks about the global setting "To always use the display name from the message header, go to Tools | Options | Advanced | Reading & Display and uncheck Show only display name for people in my address book. " What is your setting??
Status: NEW → UNCONFIRMED
Ever confirmed: false
I did read that. As noted in Comment 6, the setting is unchecked.
Therefore, I expect to always see the From information to display what's in the message header.
Ah, I misunderstood.
And is the person's AB entry also have "Always prefer ..." unchecked?
It is also unchecked, in the Collected Addresses address book. There is exactly one contact in my Personal Address Book, which is not her.
Summary: Search results corrupt name → Global search results preview unexpectedly using address book's display name instead of name from message source, ignoring unchecked option "Show only display name for people in my address book"
Severity: normal → S3
