I'm a novice user for reading mail in "threaded mode".

I expanded a news group thread by clicking on the "thread icon" column for the
message at the top of the thread.

Then I wanted to collapse this particular thread. clicking the thread icon again
didn't seem to do that. Double clicking the subject field was the only way I
could get the thread to collapse. But doing that also caused a stand alone
message window to be created for every message in the thread. I guess this is
because we seem to be selecting all the messages in a thread when you expand it.
Is that the correct behavior?
why wouldn't a novice user use the twisty to open or close?
all the steps you describe sound like non-bugs to me.

the novice user discovers that thread column is a short cut to select a thread.

but if they think it is supposed to be used as a toggle, they would do what you
said.

I think users will use the twisty. jglick, comments?
seth, what twisty do you mean?

The only think that looks clickable to me is if I try to click on the thread
icon in the thread column for the thread I'm looking at. I click on that and it
doesn't collapse the thread.

I try clicking on the subject and that doesn't collapse it either. If I double
click the subject column it seems to close the thread but then I also get
multiple stand alone messages to come up for all the threads.

I'm using modern3 skin on a build from today.

What does the "twisty" look like in threaded mode? I gather it's not the
threaded icon that I'm talking about...

Seth, I see our confusion (or at least my confusion).

The twisties are missing from MOnday's build. I'm using a build after the modern
3 landing and the twisties are gone.

I went back to a build from Friday and I see standard twisties.

that explains my confusion when you said click on the twisties and I said "what
twisties!" =).

re-assigning to hewitt as this must be a modern 3 landing problem.

Having the twisties back *should* solve this confusion. :-)
So this bug is really "twisty-column isn't shown in modern3"? Please update the
summary.
marking invalid. hewitt has a fix for the twisty problem.

not a problem once #78284 lands. (as soon as the tree opens, hewitt tells me)

I'm not sure bug 78284 is going to fix this because the twistie isn't squashed.
It displays OK, it's just that is doesn't repond to the toggle click. We'll
see. I check this again with tomorrow's build. The description should change
to Twisty (which is visible) expands the thread but doesn't collapse it. I will
update this tomorrow after I find out if bug 78284 fixes this problem.
twisties should prevent users from double clicking in the thread column for
expand / collapse.

if you don't think double clicking in the "thread" column should do what double
clicking in the subject column does, we should log a seperate bug on that and cc
the UI people.

I think it should do what it currently does.
Your absolutely right, the fix for 78284 worked on this too all platforms. The
twistie when selected toggles between expand and collapse widget. Verified as
invalid.
