Details

When watching a live stream, sometimes audio and video cut out for a few seconds. Moments later, the stream comes back, having missed a few seconds of content. If my connection can't keep up, buffer the content rather than skipping it.
The player isn't our code, but rather provided by the CDN.

The general behavior of TCP streaming players is exactly as you describe as desired, I suspect that the issue may be with local system performance, not the stream itself. Unfortunately, there isn't enough information here to tell.
You could try the webm alternate stream, which uses the html5 <video> element, and behaves the way you want.

It's experimental and not always available, but try http://ec2-50-112-77-171.us-west-2.compute.amazonaws.com:8000/airmoz.webm the next time you want to watch a stream.
Not enough info, and the underlying infrastructure has changed since this bug was filed.
