RESOLVED DUPLICATE of bug 536768

People

(Reporter: Lindazilla99, Unassigned)

Details

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 5.1; rv:15.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/15.0
Build ID: 20120824154833

Steps to reproduce:

1. Go to Tools->Options->Security->Junk tab, clear all the check boxes, and then click OK.
2. Go to Tools->Account Settings->Local Folders->Junk Settings, clear the "Enable adaptive junk mail controls for this account" check box, and then click OK.
3. Go to Tools->Account Settings->My mail->Junk Settings, clear the "Enable adaptive junk mail controls for this account" check box, and then click OK.

Actual results:

The first two steps work fine, but nothing happens in the third step. The dialog box just sits there.

Furthermore, if I don't click OK in the third step but instead move to different items in the left pane of Tools-> Account Settings, and then move back to Tools->Account Settings->My mail->Junk Settings, the "Enable adaptive junk mail controls for this account" check box will be reselected.

Expected results:

"Enable adaptive junk mail controls for this account" for "My mail" should have turned off.
Do you use Global inbox on your "My mail" account? In Server settings -> Advanced, did you set to store the messages inside another account? If yes, disable this temporarily (set to store inside own Inbox) and then set your Junk settings as you wish.
Thanks for the reply. It is set to the Global Inbox.
Did the workaround help?
After completing my instructions you can enable Global inbox again.
Sorry, but I haven't tried it. I just switched to Thunderbird from Outlook Express, and I have now run into some other, worse problems. So I am probably going to have to switch to Outlook (which I was really hoping to avoid). Thanks for the workaround.
If you could try the workaround it would be nice from you, because we have fixed a bug like this recently so would be glad to know if it is the same.

Also tell us more about the other worse problems.
I tried it and it worked!

Also, I am probably back because I just wasted my morning trying to deal with Outlook. I've been using Firefox for a long time and I want to love Thunderbird, too.

Here are the worse problems:

-The biggest problem is described here: https://getsatisfaction.com/mozilla_messaging/topics/some_recipients_get_a_message_thats_missing_some_content

-My second problem is more of a design issue: not being able to set the font size when composing a message. And not even knowing what the font size is for the sizes of small, medium, large, and so on. It also seems that others receive messages with tinier text than is shown to me when I'm writing the message. (And they're using my formatting, not their own email client's formatting settings.) Also, replying seems to change the font, font color, and so on of the entire message, not just my new part of the message. Since I'm using this for work, these things can make the messages look unprofessional.

-The last thing is that when I was searching through the questions and support pages, I found a lot of issues like an entire inbox's worth of messages disappearing, or the calendar not working all of a sudden. These seem like major problems so I'm a bit worried about something bad happening in the future. I have to admit that I didn't really read through everything, so maybe these things were fixed right away or people were confused. I am using a very old computer running Win XP right now, and I'm getting a new computer running Windows 7 and want to move everything over. I'm just hoping that I don't run into any big issues when going to Windows 7.

Thanks,
Linda
Good, then if the workaround worked then your problem is bug 536768 and is fixed starting with Thunderbird 17. Until then please use the workaround.

- Somebody will reply to you on the missing content problem on getsatisfaction site.

- If you use the HTML formatting option for messages, you should be able to set the size of the font. I do not use it personally so do not know how it behaves. But surely the recipients can override the sizes in their email program so you can't really rely on exact font sizes. You can also enlarge received message by using Ctrl++ or Ctrl+- (as in Firefox). Please search through bugzilla if you can find any reports of this problem and join them.

- The message loosing problems are reported ocassionaly. Some of them are real and get fixed, some happen due to antivirus programs interfering or user does something bad. I and my users have personally never encountered such a problem in 10 years using TB. For me, I would be worried using Outlook, because of its proprietary storage or messages. If something happens to it, I would have no idea how to fix it and retrieve the messages (maybe some paid solutions exist). On the other hand, in Thunderbird, the storage is standard format (mbox or maildir-lite) and I can fix breakage manually (and you can too if you ask in the forums or a bug). So I have much better feeling using TB. Also you can backup your mail storage periodically and if something happens, just restore it. Also, if you use POP3 server, you can set TB to leave new messages on the server for some amount of days (like 30 or more). So if something happens to your storage, you just recover from backup (e.g. 25 days old) and TB automatically redownloads the missing messages (the difference of the backup to the state on server).

Or if you use IMAP4, you have all messages on the server so if something happens to TB it your not kill your messages on the server.

Thanks!

I hope someone replies about the missing content problem. No one has so far, and it's almost impossible to provide a way to duplicate it. Have you ever heard of this problem? If it was a one-time fluke, I can let it go. Otherwise, it's pretty bad.

Nope, you can't set the font size in Thunderbird. And there are the other problems with the editor. I'll definitely search the bugs and file some if there aren't any already.

Thanks so much for the other info. I found the "storing messages on server" option and am going to set it. Great idea!
It is called "leave on server, for at most X days".
Yes, I found it.

BTW, Outlook and other Office file formats (and protocols) are publicly available on MSDN. For example, see http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff385210%28v=office.12%29.
