Expected results:

In the Freenode IRC network, using a registered nickname require identification with NickServ within thirty seconds, or else it will automatically change to some guest nick. This helps protect you from being impersonated, and it would be nice to have this in Mozilla IRC network as well.

It doesn't do what was described. You can keep using a registered nick without identifying.

You have to set the protect mode on your nick.

On a nick with protect mode on, this is what you'll see :

> [12:16:54] -    NickServ- | ([e-mail]) nick, type /msg NickServ IDENTIFY password.  Otherwise,

And then Nickserv will change your nick. 

/msg nickserv help secure

Hmm so NickServ here has a different way to set this, sorry then. I tried reading help for these two commands below, but I can't understand the difference. I ended up enabling both, but could you explain?

help set secure
    Syntax: SET SECURE {ON | OFF}
     
    Turns NickServ's security features on or off for your
    nick.  With SECURE set, you must enter your password
    before you will be recognized as the owner of the nick,
    regardless of whether your address is on the access
    list.  However, if you are on the access list, NickServ
    will not auto-kill you regardless of the setting of the
    KILL option.
    
help set kill
    Syntax: SET KILL {ON | QUICK | IMMED | OFF}
     
    Turns the automatic protection option for your nick
    tries to take your nick, they will be given one minute to
    change to another nick, after which NickServ will forcibly change
    their nick.
     
    If you select QUICK, the user will be given only 20 seconds
    to change nicks instead of the usual 60.  If you select
    IMMED, user's nick will be changed immediately without being
    warned first or given a chance to change their nick; please
    do not use this option unless necessary.  Also, your
    network's administrators may have disabled this option.

I think kill enforces the actual change, secure allows you to only make changes to your nick if you've identified with your password.
