Let's see if we can find a way to race disk cache accesses against http conditional revalidations. At least build a prototype and measure it with stone ridge. Its going to be tricky.. first the etag/lm info will need to me in the memory cache or we can't make conditional validations. I understand this is a problem right now. It might make for an arugment for a reduced cache size (or a separate smaller lru of just this meta information). second we have to be careful that we aren't sending a large number of conditional requests that cause queueing of non-conditional requests when the former can be served from disk cache. That's probably a net loss. Pipelines and SPDY make that a non problem.
