Steps to reproduce:

I often receive multipart/alternative messages that have an empty or minimal text/plain part followed by a text/calendar part (containing a VCALENDAR entry).


Actual results:

The text/calendar portion is ignored and the empty text/plain portion is displayed instead. Nor is there any way to access the text/calendar version.


Expected results:

The text/calendar can be rendered directly as text.

Could be duplicate of Thunderbird Bug 505024 or Bug 783603. 

Or do you have Lightning installed? If yes, what version of Lightning do you use? Do you get any calendar related error messages in Tools > Error Console?
Yes, this is a duplicate of Bug 505024. (It didn't show up when I did a search of the database for bugs dealing with text/calendar, which is a bug in bugzilla.)
