Have you enabled the offline cache feature for the calendar? Do you get any error messages in Tools > Error Console during the steps described above?
Yes I have offline cache enabled. And I get the following errors just by clicking the Invite attendee button.
And I just noticed that when I create a meeting and try to invite attendees that for me it shows one of my other Identity email addresses (see lightning1.jpg) and not my main email address that I selected in in the calendar setup (see lightning2.jpg).

Attachment is obsolete: true
Shows my other identities including psmith@smithabode.com which shows up as me in a new event instead of psmith@smithinet.com, my main account and the address selected in calendar setup.
Ok ignore everything I was saying about identities and the wrong on showing up as me when I click the Invite Attendees button in the New Event window.
I had a setting wrong and corrected it. Now my main identity does show up as me when I click the Invite Attendees button.
But the problem still persists. When I click Save and Close, I do not get an email confirmation box (the one that asks about supporting Outlook 2000), no email in sent items, and recipient never receives a meeting invite.

The only workaround at the moment is disabling offline cache. Ought to be fixed in Lightning 1.8.
