it took about 10 seconds before battery icon changed from red & empty to white & charging. i was checking the wires, etc.

I ran into this condition about a week ago, but once I rebooted the device I couldn't repro it.  I think there might be some sort of state that you have to get into to have this occur... I could be mistaken.
