I have an older MacBook Pro running Mac OS X 10.4. It had on it Firefox 3.6.26, which was released in January. When I went to Help > Check For Updates, I was told that no newer version was available. However, I later discovered that two newer versions were in fact released before support for 3.6.x was discontinued: 3.6.27 and 3.6.28. I would think that it would be good to ensure that users stuck on 3.6.x for hardware/OS reasons should at least be able to always update to the latest version. Was this an intentional decision or merely an oversight? How hard would it be rectify? (I imagine even older versions are prompted to update, too, no?)

Please provide a bit more information for debugging: 1) Permissions on /Applications/Firefox.app 2) Username of the user running Firefox (as returned by 'whoami') 3) Set app.update.log to True, open the error console, then check for updates. Paste the "https://aus2.mozilla.org" from there. 4) Zip up updates* and *.xml from /Applications/Firefox.app/Contents/MacOS and attach it here.
Nevermind - I realized what's going on. Our updates aren't capable of targeting 10.4 specifically - it lumps all versions of OS X together. We have a major upgrade to 12.0 on the wire for ALL 3.6.13 through 3.6.28 users as a last ditch attempt to get them up to date. I don't recall the exact justification for doing so (normally we'd only target 3.6.28) - Alex or Dan might recall, I know it was talked about. In the medium-term future we'll have a more robust update server capable of targeting users more selectively. That's tracked in https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=balrog. Unfortunately, there's nothing we can do about this right now.
