Now that we have our very own newsletter, we need to make it possible for current affiliates to sign up for it. 

Can we provide an affiliates newsletter signup form/boz for current English-speaking Affiliates on the profile page? If we need to do it for all locales, then we can add text explaining as such. 

This is a P2/P3 feature request.

Sure, any specifics on design/copy? We could have a signup button, a checkbox, etc.

Note that a checkbox would imply that we can unsubscribe them as well, which is a bit more engineering effort, but not too bad (and it gives the user more control!).

I'd like to receive the Firefox Affiliate newsletter and periodic Firefox Affiliates updates via email.

Please let us know if it's possible to show this signup box for only English speaking Affiliates.

It is possible to show only to en-US users. Just to confirm, you're talking about a checkbox on the edit profile page, right?

Sad news y'all! Turns out if we want to be able to unsubscribe users we'll need to make some modifications to basket.

That leaves us with two options:

1. Make the modifications to basket, which requires some planning and thought and a lot more effort.

2. Don't use a checkbox and offer some other way for existing users to sign up.

I would suggest option 2. Perhaps we could add another sidebar box for the mothership that offers a newsletter signup button? We could even try to make it look a little different than the normal, white boxes (perhaps with a special background for the title bar or something) to make it stand out? Thoughts?

I fiddled around with Firebug and got this mockup of what the signup might look like. Thoughts:

- The button and placeholder text are from the FB app, but the box title is badly-made-up.

- I still like the idea of adding some visual flair to the title bar to differentiate it from the other sidebar boxes. Perhaps some red and blue mail stripes?

- This puts the count of boxes in the sidebar at 5, it's a little crowded and hard to notice. Perhaps we can remove the news box and move this above the FB app promo to make it more prominent?

Also, Mozillians may be doing some similar work and might update basket to support unsubscribing users in the way we want to. I'll update this bug when I hear more about the results of that.

Mozillians was not able to move forward with having a checkbox, so we're back to adding another sidebar box. Any feedback on my mockup above?

Along with a few tests for the newsletter signup, this updates
django-browserid to the latest version and removes mock_browserid, which
got ported to the library a while back.

Verified, the form shows up for en-US on production, verified via IRC that the email used to test was signed up correctly.
