Thanks Laura, I saw that bug #804194 had some copy direction and snippets that were released this week. Should we use those strings as a starting point here? Had those gone through matej?

Laura, which of those were approved by Facebook? I think we need to tweak the message a little for the GA audience, perhaps have a bit more fun with them. I don't think the Aurora snippets there would work well, but the Beta ones are a good starting off point.

Thanks Chelsea - I'm going to assign this to Matej. Chelsea and LoFo you can help provide the direction here and we'll go from there. Once the copy is done, I'll re-assign to Ty for graphics.

Here are my three favourites from the Beta/Aurora launch:
Get [Facebook Messenger for Firefox] and stay connected without opening a new tab or window.
Introducing [Facebook Messenger for Firefox], the easiest way to chat and stay on top of your friends' updates. Give it a try.
Be the master of your social circle with [Facebook Messenger for Firefox]. Try it today and let all your Facebook friends know.
And here are three based on Facebook's language:
Keep up with friends wherever you go on the Web with [Facebook Messenger for Firefox]. Add it to Firefox today!
Get [Facebook Messenger for Firefox] and chat with friends while you browse. Stay connected without having to click away.
Introducing [Facebook Messenger for Firefox]. See new comments, photo tags and other stuff instantly on any page.

I'd suggest that we go with 3 so that we can rotate them and have some backups in case we get stuck in Facebook approvals. These are my top 3:
Be the master of your social circle with [Facebook Messenger for Firefox]. Try it today and let all your Facebook friends know.
Keep up with friends wherever you go on the Web with [Facebook Messenger for Firefox]. Add it to Firefox today!
Get [Facebook Messenger for Firefox] and chat with friends while you browse. Stay connected without having to click away.
Winston, what do you think? Does three work for your purposes?

Please note:
We'd like to do at least 2 variations of snippets:
* One with standard icon and text -> pointing to custom tab.
* One with icon and text --> highlighting product video.
Comment 9•13 years ago
|
||
Right! Yes, so we'll need a snippet variant to tease the video, then?
Comment 10•13 years ago
|
||
Yes please :) would be nice to run both and see which performs better. Though I think pointing people to the landing page is probably the stronger solution since the video is also there. I'm a little torn but we can also rotate between the two with a heavier push on the basic snippet. I say lets get the strings and have them (though perhaps with a slight lower priority if it comes down to it with l10n. what do you think?

Any of the options in comment 7 would work for the video version of the snippet. Here's how I would change the CTA for each:
Be the master of your social circle with Facebook Messenger for Firefox. [Watch the video] to learn more.
Keep up with friends wherever you go on the Web. [Watch the video] to learn more about Facebook Messenger for Firefox.
Get Facebook Messenger for Firefox and chat with friends while you browse. [Watch the video] to learn how.

For the video snippet, you're proposing something like what we're doing with Flicks? And once they've viewed the video, is there a way for them to activate the feature?

They would need to click through to the Facebook tab to activate the feature. They can't do it on about:home. Does that help Winston?

Okay, to summarize these are the snippets we're going forward with:
General:
Be the master of your social circle with [Facebook Messenger for Firefox]. Try it today and let all your Facebook friends know.
Keep up with friends wherever you go on the Web with [Facebook Messenger for Firefox]. Add it to Firefox today!
Video:
Be the master of your social circle with Facebook Messenger for Firefox. [Watch the video] to learn more.
Get Facebook Messenger for Firefox and chat with friends while you browse. [Watch the video] to learn how.
If we're agreed, then I will send these to l10n.

Chelsea: For the video snippet, will it just link to a page with the video page or will it a create a window and play the video on about:home? If the second, can we use the out-of-the-box video video snippet with no modifications? We don't have dev cycles to create a custom video snippet experience, but we have a standard one already created that we can just use.

|

Chris, I'll let Tara talk more about what she's looking for, but I believe it will be like what we're doing with Flicks, so that the user can play the video on About:home. I think the expectation is that we would use the video snippet code that has already been created.

Winston - can you please confirm whether we can or can't expand beyond the 40x50 snippet box. I know we generally have full flexibility though standard snippets have stuck with the original specs of 40x50. We don't want to go too far beyond that but given the creative we're exploring - a bit more room will be helpful. Can you please let us know what our options are here? I'd like to provide a snippet graphic that is bigger than 40x50.
Thanks.

Hi there. The video should play on about:home vs. sending them elsewhere. It should behave the same way as our other video snippets have behaved -> I believe it's the same as the Flicks snippet. The video will be hosted on youtube - but for this you may need to host it internally, is that correct? Please advise on any steps we need to take to properly hand off the video files to you.

We've done larger snippets in the past so shouldn't be an issue. But Chris or Mkelly would need to advise on the max dimensions.

Ok thanks for the quick response. Winston since you're the channel owner can you please follow up with Chris / MKelly and make sure we have an answer asap today? thanks.

Update:
* we have liberty to change the icon size - within reason.
* we have an idea for light (very light) animation on the snippet - I'll send a separate email to highlight this and see if we can get it in for launch. stay tuned.

Attaching initial snippet creative exploration (thanks to Lee for the polished mockups):
* facebook jewels + "f" icon. We'll need to decide which one we prefer, or try both to test.
* we've included 2 alignment options - we'll need to discuss and see which is best, which one fits the required specs for snippets.
* we've included 2 states - one with notifications turned off, and one with it on.
* static - for the static version of the snippet, we'd use the graphic with the notification turned on.
* animation - for the animated version (timeline tbd) we'd want to start with state 1 (notification turned off) and animate to state 2 (animation turned on)

Social API Snippet - Jewels 3up - no alert/default
FYI, I mocked the snippet graphic (jewels) left-aligned to the Google logo above it.

Great! Thanks Lee.
I'm going to close out this bug. So we can begin implementation.
There are various copy strings and snippet icons - we'd like to mix and match these for testing purposes. Those graphics are:
* 3 facebook jewels with the notification turned on
* 3 fb jewels + fb icon (so 4 icons) with the notification turned on
* Messenger icon
I'll follow up on the implementation bug and Chelsea can add more direction there.

Winston -- to be safe let's wait a couple of days after launch before launching these snippets.
It would be great if they can be locked and loaded by 11/20, and then from there let's aim to launch them 2 days after, on 11/22 once we can confirm that the feature is working nicely in GA.

Hi Lee -
The small icon works great (. For the larger snippets, can I get them without the about:home imagery? Just the snippet image itself as a PNG.
Need these resized, transparent and no about:home background - just the snippet itself:

Hey Winston,
Those 3 jewels are all attached to each other (as one snippet). What is the desired dimensions (or what size do we need to be *under) for the "larger snippets" that you mentioned?
Tricky part is that I created those directly from the browser chrome buttons in Firefox, because the jewels that FB provided didn't scale down well to that small a size.
Can anyone provide official FB jewels at that smaller size?
Comment 37•13 years ago
|
||
Lee: we have flexibility on the dimension. Just take your existing graphic, sized as you deemed fit in the mockup (with all jewels in one) and hand that off as transparent PNG file. That should be all Winston needs. Winston - please confirm.

Scratch the files i mentioned - i think this is the one Tara wants - but same issue - https://bug799738.bugzilla.mozilla.org/attachment.cgi?id=681313.
It'd be good to get a few sizes on width to play with so we can see what looks best. But in terms of height - 50 pixels. And width... 100 - 150.

This works. Let's start here and see what it looks like. But height of 50 would be good for alignment if possible.

Winston - can't we stick to the size that Lee has designed? I think that looks best, and I'd like to align the implementation with the mockup as designed.
Lee, I'll let you decide on the size. but please provide the PNG asap. thanks so much.

Winston - height of 50 will not work for several reasons. Lee will upload what he has and sized as in the mockup.
