Although there is documentation on getting access ot XPCOM from the SDK, it's not easy to find or very well presented.

There are a couple of places where XPCOM access is discussed: inside the "Chrome authority" section, where XPCOM isn't even mentioned, and inside the "XUL Migration" guide, which isn't an obvious place for people not porting from XUL.

We should extract the info from "XUL Migration", combine it with the "Chrome authority" stuff, and make that replace the existing "Chrome authority" guide, renamed something helpful like "Accessing XPCOM".
I don't think we should spend time on this one.  We should minimize discussion of XPCOM so that people don't think we support it.
