We need to present Telefonica with some design options for the Firefox OS phone casing - we would like this to be an orange phone with Firefox branding that meets the requirements of Mozilla's brand requirements. As far as timing, we need this pretty quickly. Thank You!
Thanks Julie. I'm going to put this bug in Lee's talented hands. Could you please provide some additional information around the phone casing: a visual reference, specs, and other design requirements that we should be aware of? And when you say pretty quickly, what does that mean exactly? what is the deliverable and how many design options are you looking for?

+1 for all the questions in comment #1...I had asked similar questions via email. Am recommending a quick kickoff call to work through the details. Right now I'm afraid we don't have enough info to get started.
Met with John and Stormy to get more details nailed down. Here is where we stand as far as guidance for design: 1) For the casing, we can call it the Mozillian Phone, powered by Firefox OS (assuming tagline meets brand requirements). We had thought about calling it the "developer phone" but these phones will be available for non-developers to purchase as well, so having a more inclusive name that doesn't limit to a particular audience segment is better at this time. This name may change, but it works for the purpose of showing the casing design to Telefonica in the short-term. 2) For the box, I recommend a white box with a picture of the orange phone on the top, firefox logos on top/bottom (shorter ends), and "Mozillian" on the left/right longer sides of the box. I am inspired by the iPhone box design (http://cl.ly/image/3o1k403r2e0Y). There are many boxes we can look at but most of them have the phone image on top and branding/logos on the sides. Droid box: http://cl.ly/image/121z1G3J3R0J, Random orange box: http://cl.ly/image/3K1d1M0Z1B3S If we have an eye-catching orange phone casing, it will look really good on a white box. I hope that helps, John.
Thanks Julie. I have a couple of quick follow-up questions: 1. Just to confirm, we need to include the phrase "Mozillian Phone" somewhere on the casing? 2. The packaging is definitely part of this project then? When will that be due? Are there details around the phone's size or box size that we should know about? And this is separate from the other boxing project? Am still trying to wrap my head around this one...
Hey John, An update for you on this. Mark and Christie (copied) will most likely be driving this design request going forward, as they are taking on the phones program starting today. We met today and rather than rushing to provide a name out of a vacuum as well as guidance on the related packaging, we think it might be best if you all sat down and chatted with Stormy and other people who would have input on this at the engagement offsite. Mark and Christie will follow up with you there. Thanks, Julie
Hi Julie, John asked me to iterate on some casing ideas using the few various taglines and wordmarks you mentioned above. Here are 6 mockups for us to use as a starting point with variations levels of emphasis on "Mozillian Phone", "Prototype", and "Powered by Firefox OS." Let us know your thoughts! Thanks
Julie, thanks for the update. Mark & Christie, looking forward to talking further next week. Mark & Christie, as a starting point please take a look at the mockups Lee posted in comment #6. We'll have Monday to make further changes, but it will be hard to get much done during the offsite. So, if this is that urgent, let's try to knock it out on Monday. (also please note that Lee's mockups are only for reference...we'd need to make some refinements before any would be ready for actual production) That said, if the name is still up in the air I'm on board with finding something besides Mozillian Phone...that doesn't really roll off the tongue very easily.
I like #5 counting from the top left with the dinosaur logo. I'm struggling a bit with using the word prototype to signal the not ready for prime time nature of phone and the OS, but don't have a better suggestion off the top of my head. I'll think about it over the weekend.
To be honest I'd actually prefer not using the dino head here (we're phasing it out everywhere else), although that one is my one of my faves, otherwise. Let's talk more about the wording next week.
Darn, then this idea wouldn't be the best ... Call it the Firefox OS "Incubator" Phone and show an egg with a baby Mozilla coming out. Apache and other open source groups have an incubator status for new projects, so it's a term I think developers would understand.
If "Incubator" resonates more than "Prototype" with the developer community, perhaps we can use that (sans dino/egg) illustrations.
Given our move away from the dino in general I'm not sure the dino/egg visual is really best here, but I like the word Incubator. Mark, what's the general next step here? If Lee comes up with a few more options we like what happens next? Thanks!
Here is a couple of new mockups integrating "Incubator" onto the casing
John, re: next steps, I think we need Stormy to weigh in here. My impression was that we needed something to show Telefonica to help in the discussions about budgeting (in particular their contribution to the purchase of developer phones), but I don't know the specifics of timing and how Stormy wanted to use the mockups.
That makes sense, thanks. Stormy, please share your thoughts on Lee's designs this afternoon if possible...as you know, everyone will be pretty wrapped up with the Engagement offsite for the next few days, but Lee still has a window of opportunity to make further changes today. If these are good as is, then it's less urgent of course.
Also, fwiw, although I'm not the target market here I'm still not 100% sold on the word 'incubator' in this context. I like the idea of it in theory, but it seems like the way we're using it here doesn't fully connect.
John, fwiw, I'm not totally sold on incubator, either. I think it loses something without the visual cue--and we are trying to convey something about the software on the device by labeling the hardware, which while it won't be the final hardware the software ships on, is not itself experimental or preliminary. Yet I can't help thinking of incubator with reference to the hardware. Going back to prototype, my problem with it is I think of either: a) prototype hardware, which again isn't the thing in development here, or b) throw-away software that isn't necessarily being evolved to final version.
Can we call it "Early Adopter" phone or something that implies that they people buying it are cool and ahead of the curve?
I like the mockups!
Are these designs for the final commercial release, or as for the developer version?
These designs are thought-starters for what will become the developer version. We have a few steps that need to happen before we even get there, but you can consider this some early thinking in what will become the developer version. Just to be super, super clear for anyone who reads this bug, this *definitely* has nothing to do with the final commercial release.
