800987 - No attachment pane or scroll bars in message pane for Thunderbird 15.01 on Ubuntu 12.04.1 + Lightning enabled

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64) AppleWebKit/537.4 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/22.0.1229.92 Safari/537.4

Steps to reproduce:

(1) Start Thunderbird 15.01 on laptop (Thinkpad X200) 1280x800px display with second (Samsung 22") 1680x1050px display of Ubuntu 12.04.1 (running Gnome classic/fallback).  

(2) Notice mail with attachment in thread pane.  

(3) Look for attachment pane, can't find one.

(4) Look for vertical scroll bar in message pane, can't find one.  

(5) Maximize Thunderbird window in primary 1280x800px display.  Can't see attachment pane or message pane scroll bar.  

(6) Expand window height on second 1680x1050px display.  Still no scroll bar in message pane.  When window height approaches 1050px height, can see attachment pane and status bar.  

(7) Reduce window size to less than full height (i.e. < 1050px).  Status bar is not visible.  Tools ... Status Bar ... unselect ... , then Tools ... Status Bar ... select ... but still don't see status bar.  

(8) Select message from thread pane to open in a new tab.  Scroll bars are not visible.  Drag window border.  Vertical scroll bar appears.  Horizontal scroll bar never appears.


Actual results:

(1) Attachment pane and status bar aren't visible when Thunderbird is on primary 1280x800px screen.  Attachment pane and status bar aren't visible when Thunderbird is on secondary 1650x1080px screen at less than near full height.

(2) Scroll bars within message pane never appear in preview.   

(3) Message in full tab hides vertical scroll bar, but will reveal when width is widened (i.e. with dragging).  Horizontal scroll bar never appears.


Expected results:

Attachment panes and scroll bars should always be available in preview mode, and in full tab mode.

There is a message in the Tools ... Error console ..., but I think that it's unrelated.

I can't see the scrollbar or attachment at the bottom of my Thinkpad 1280x800 screen, even if I maximize the window.  The only way to read everything is to select the "forward" button, so that the attachment goes in the upper right pane.

Reading "Bug 375856 - No scrollbars when resizing XUL dialogs" at https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=375856 , I've now diagnosed that the scrollbar problem is associated with the installation of Lightning.  This seems to be a problem not only under Ubuntu, but also under XP.

I was complaining about the attachment pane, but bug also means that the status bar is missing.

When I disable the Lightning plugin, the status bar comes back.

Changing the importance to major.  The workaround is too annoying.  To get a status bar so that I can read e-mail, disable Thunderbird.  To enter calendar entries, enable Thunderbird (but then lose the status bar, with scrolling too far down).

The good news is that I no longer see this problem with Lightning 4.74 on Thunderbird 45.5.1 on Ubuntu 16.04.1.

The bad new is that it took 3 years for someone to notice this problem, so I no longer use Lightning!
