Thunderbird currently supports only two email addresses per contact. Many of my contacts have more than two email addresses (e.g. two work addresses and two personal addresses).

Google Contacts allows for this, providing arbitrarily many email fields (each with a "type") and it would be nice if Thunderbird would too, since it's not at all an unusual problem!

This has been filed a couple of times already with those reports having been duped to bug 118665 covering more than just the e-mail address field. The most recent update was given in bug 118665 comment #84 (with reference to bug 469209 needing to be solved for the respective backend extensions before such additions can be made to the user interface), and further down links to some extensions are given.
