The download also works for me. Reporter: I think the download unsuccess could have a lot of reasons. Please try later and this is all what I can tell you.

Xiaobin, This actually works if I wait patiently for 5 mins or so. But a user will think tha thte plugin window is just not doing anything since there is no activity in the downlaod window at all. The plugin did get installed. Offby1 can you please retry this ? This might be invalid since the plugin does get installed after a while. I agree however that it is still very slow....

Shrir: Actually I don't why it works for you. I tried yesterday and I saw after a while when I choosed download, a page was poped up, "kind" enough to remind me that it will take too long to download plugin using my network configuration (56K modem) even though I have a "fast" network bandwidth.

I tried two ways to install JRE plugins today. The first is using mozilla linux installer and second is using debug build of mozilla. Both works fine with downloading Java Plugin. One thing needs to be paid attention is when you login to linux as a normal user and install linux in some directory like /usr/local (in order to do that, you need a super user password). When you run mozilla and try to install Java plugin that way, you may get message like: Java 2 Plug-in for Linux: Download was unsuccessful. Please try again. The Java Plug-in is 7.6Mb and will take you 37 minutes to fully download with a 28.8 modem or 19 minutes with a 56K modem. Alternatively, you can download this plug-in directly from our FTP site at ftp://ftp.netscape.com/pub/netscape6/english/6.0/windows/win32/smartupdate/jre13 i.exe for Windows. Please e-mail ftp-plugins@netscape.com if you continue to have problems. Error encountered -- -202 The reason is the installer want to create a directory called java2, however, you don't have that permission to do that, right now, mozilla is not kind of smart to tell you that way and instead it just tell you that "STUPID" message.

John: Actually you should select the right plugin. You should be able to see two choices, "Plugins for windows" and "Plugins for linux". Did you selcet the right one?

John: Three questions: 1. How did you install mozilla, as root or a normal user? 2. How did you run mozilla, as root or a normal user? 3. Do you have any problems to use other plugins such as flash player? Thanks!

Mozilla was installed as root and run as root while downloading the Java plugin. Now the last time I tried it, the download succeeded but I used the big pipe at work to do the download. Although the plugin successfully installed this time (or so it seems), Mozilla wedges solid while opening java based pages. http://java.sun.com for example. This is odd because I'm downloading the Netscape plugin right? Should work. So yes I'm now gett a good download, but I still seem to have some kind of problem with the plugin installed in /usr/local/mozilla. -- John

I wouldn't be so quick to conclude that this is fixed. Even though the download works, it does not succeed on anything less than the T1 at work. Also I went to some other java sites (other than Sun) and Mozilla wedges solid just like at http://java.sun.com. Try www.stockcharts.com and use the P&F tool on a stock symbol. Mozilla locks up solid for me on any java access with the plugin. -- John

john, there's a seperate bug for the problem ' java hangs browser' .xiaobin stated that this is due to the lazy java loading thing. Sothe first time you visit a page with applets...it takes a while for java to laod and actualyl render the applet. :(...i know it is too slow that way. Can you confirm if the next load of applet is faster ? Anyway , this bug is about hjava install...so I will stop ranting here...

I can understand waiting a while for the applet to load, but it never seems to complete loading (and I'm using the big pipe at work). It looks like a true hang to me. In fact, it affects all of the Mozilla windows (including mail) so loading the plugin and rendering applets is doing something very bad, not just taking a long time. Ultimately I always end up using kill -9. But if the problem is already known in the bugzilla database I guess it will be addressed and doesn't need additional proding by me.
