User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:16.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/16.0 Build ID: 20121010144125 Steps to reproduce: Start Firefox 16.0.1 from Windows7 desktop icon. Actual results: Firefox window is opened and cursor (caret?) is blinking in URL field, but if I start typing URL, text does not appear. Instead it seems keyboard focus is in Windows desktop. If I press Return key, this may start some new application from the desktop. Which app depends on what I typed. Expected results: If the cursor is blinking in URL field, typed characters should be added to that field. I should be able to type the URL to open immediately.

Could you try the basic troubleshooting steps, please: 1) Safe mode: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-firefox-issues-using-safe-mode 2) New profile: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profile-manager-create-and-remove-firefox-profiles Does it fix the issue in the location bar?

Safe mode seems to fix this.
So it's likely an issue with one of your extensions. Disable them one by one to find the culprit and report its name here, please.
I must mention that this problem does NOT happen every time. Only sometimes. But by disabling those plugins I found a fix to another problem. When I had Realplayer Browser plugin enabled, and I selected a link and then "open in new window" from popup menu, Firefox wouldn't show link's URL. But once I disabled Realplayer plugin, URL shows normally. This was actually a much bigger problem to me :) I'll continue testing to see if I can still create the focus problem when Realplayer is disabled.
After disabling Realplayer I haven't been able to create the focus problem anymore.
Anyway it's not the 1st time that RP plugin is buggy. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/flash-113-doesnt-load-video-firefox#w_solution-1-if-you-have-realplayer-installed-update-it Be sure you're running the latest version, or just disable it. Closed as invalid, reopen the bug if the issue is back.
