Details

Assume auto completion for "http://www.x.org/" Type in "http://www.x.org", Location bar will state: http://www.x.org/ Type in an extra '/' (which is not visually displayed, as the trailing '/' is already on the screen), you won't be able to backspace. Moving with left arrow key works, you can then move back to the end of string and backspace the trailing '/'. If you quickly type in the URL with no time for the autocomplete to find the cached URL, backspace works as well.
Which build are you using? I think this is invalid now, due to the way the new auto-complete widget works. please re-open if you can supply steps to reproduce in a current build.
