I am experiencing the exact same issue.

I reply to the emails in the same format they get sent to me (more often than not HTML) but I'm prompted how I would like to send the message when I press the send button. More often than not I send as plain text as it's the default setting and my preference.

This is still an issue with 17.0.2. Looking at the other related bugs this looks like it's been a long running issue with TB however I have only noticed it in last 3 months (I tend to update TB as an when prompted).

I have made the changes to mailnews.display.disable_format_flowed_support
and mailnews.send_plaintext_flowed and still having the same issue I'm afraid.

I'm using TB 17.0.2 on OSX 10.8.2
I am using TB 17.04 in Windows 7 and have this exact issue. My default is set to compose in HTML format. Often I do this in a narrow (half-monitor) view. The dropped spaces only appear after the mail is sent.

Also at times the spell check trips if I make a mistake and backspace to repair it.
