It presents three fields:

[name]
gmail.com
[password]

Originally, I was putting my username in the name field, not changing the gmail.com field and putting my password in the password field.

It was only when I looked at the hotmail setup did I realize that the gmail.com field is actually the email address field.

I would suggest that we model the setup after the gmail login and just present:
[username]
[password]
I think this is either a duplicate of or related to bug #805031.

Incidentally, I had exactly the same problem, too, and assumed gmail didn't work until after I saw bug #805031 and discovered I was just entering the data wrong.
Wireframes have been updated with proper input labeling to make this clearer.
