On Lion Apple introduced a new way to input special keys. If you hold a key in a Cocoa input it'll show a small menu next to the input with the special characters [0]. Because of this feature, key repetition was disabled by default. On Firefox, the feature is not implemented, but key repetition fails if you hold a key that doesn't have special alternatives (like q or f).

1) Focus the location bar, press and hold a. Key should repeat.
2) Focus the location bar, Press and hold f. Key should repeat but doesn't.

We should either enable key repetition for all keys, or implement Lion's special characters menu (which would be pretty cool).

For what it's worth, this bug seems to be fixed in the nightlies on Mac OS 10.8.4. I noticed it a few days ago. I used FirefoxUX.app though. øåé
Thanks for drawing attention on this bug. From what I could see, key repetition is now (10.8.4) only working in Terminal.app (it works for all keys). Other Mac applications (I tried Adium, TextEdit, TextWrangler and Xcode) have no key repetition whatever the key.

Firefox (at least m-c) behaves consistently with other Mac apps : no key repetition.

I'm not sure though what to do with this bug... Should we close it?
Additional note regarding the description of this bug: Lion's special characters menu now appear in Firefox text fields. Which is indeed pretty cool. But I'm not sure if the fix comes from Apple or from us!

One more reason to close the bug I believe.
Bug 282097 landed on mozilla-central on 2013-07-11, and first appeared in the 2013-07-12 mc nightly. It probably landed on the UX branch a day or two later.

That might have something to do with the change in behavior here.
I'm very happy that Lion's special characters menu now appears!

One thing that seems unfortunate is that it still doesn't appear in the location bar or the search bar. We should fix that. Not sure if there's an existing bug.

It does appear in the search bar, but it is hidden but the search results. I filed bug 929354 for that.

Resolving as invalid as the behavior has always matched the OS behavior.
