It should be possible for an administrator to ban a user by his username. More discussion is necessary when it comes to the interface for this, but we can have that discussion as part of doing this work. For starters, see Sheppy's earlier thoughts on this feature: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=681925#c0 Keep in mind that this bug involves only banning by username. I will open separate bugs for banning by IP, displaying an error message to the user, etc.

What problems would this solve? =============================== This would help us block and discourage MDN spammers. Who would use this? =================== Site administrators What would users see? ===================== A button labeled "Ban this user" should appear somewhere. At the moment, the user profile page seems to be the most obvious choice, but I will let Sheppy share his thoughts in the design phase. The button should only be visible to / usable by site administrators. What would users do? What would happen as a result? =================================================== When this button is clicked, the user should be banned permanently. At some point, we want to make it possible for administrators to un-ban a user, but this feature will not touch on that. Is there anything else we should know? ====================================== Bug 681925 describes many other features related to banning users. While building all of those features at the same time would be ideal, I would rather we break it up. That means that we will land this feature for banning users before we land a feature for un-banning them, but this will also allow us to get /something/ up sooner than later and adapt to feedback from users sooner in the process. If landing this feature before the other features described in bug 681925 is unacceptable, we could always develop it behind a "testers" feature flag for now.

So in terms of a concrete design proposal... how do we feel about a "Ban this user" button on the user profile next to the "Manage API keys" and "Edit profile" buttons?

(In reply to John Karahalis [:openjck] from comment #2) > So in terms of a concrete design proposal... how do we feel about a "Ban > this user" button on the user profile next to the "Manage API keys" and > "Edit profile" buttons? Yes, that's one place to put it. I would also like to have one on history pages when you're looking at a revision and see that it's spammy or whatever, as well as on the revision dashboard when looking at a revision there.

Sheppy: Do you know of any "confirmation" pages on MDN, like "Are you sure you want to XYZ..." Trying to find a precedent for something like that.

Yeah, when you go to revert a page, you get one. It's ugly as sin (something I will eventually file a bug about), but it's there.

We need to know what email address to give the users to appeal their ban. Do we have mdn-admins@mozilla.com finalized?

Does that address exist already? I seem to remember something like that existing, but being inaccessible a couple of years ago.

Sheppy filed a ServiceNow request for, I think, mdn-admin@mozilla.org. Sheppy, please confirm.
