Details
User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10.7; rv:18.0) Gecko/18.0 Firefox/18.0
Build ID: 20120927082850
Steps to reproduce:
My TB is set to display the number of *new messages* (and not unread messages): mail.biff.use_new_count_in_mac_dock is set to true.
Actual results:
This stopped working from (I believe) TB 15 on. Now TB displays a ridiculously high number of new messages on the icon red badge (apparently not the number of unread messages either). I need to view the messages in the inbox (and not e.g. in a filtered folder) for it to reinit the count to zero (and thus remove the badge).
Expected results:
The correct number of new messages seems to be either lost or never properly computed.

Anything in Tools -> Error console ?
Does repairing folders with unread emails help ?

Nothing in Console, but this was apparently a side effect of some corruption. To access my IMAP mail when offline, I use the synchronization feature of Thunderbird. For an unknown reason I had duplicates of my local mirrors of IMAP INBOX and other folders (INBOX-1, INBOX-2...). I disabled synchronization, wiped out everything clear and re-enabled sync, and my badge problems disappeared.
I should have checked that before reporting.
