Details
User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Ubuntu; Linux x86_64; rv:16.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/16.0 Build ID: 20121025212310 Steps to reproduce: 1. Reset Firefox to defaults to ensure no addons were causing the issue. 2. Started Firefox on my Asus G71-GX with Quad-Core 2GHz Processor and 6 GB RAM (running 64-bit Ubuntu 12.10) via a call from strace with follow-forks (output attached) 3. Navigated to Google 4. Performed a search 5. Performed an images search 6. Downloaded an image 7. Closed the browser 8. Reproduced this on an HP Mini 1010NR (1.2 GHz Processor, 2 GB RAM) with 32-bit Ubuntu 12.10, same version. Actual results: Firefox frequently consumed over 50% of CPU time during this test, as measured by top. Performance during these peaks degraded specifically. Expected results: While I expect a browser to occasionally increase resource consumption, it should not happen this frequently, especially when performing low-impact activities.
I was unable to add the 34MB attachment, perhaps due to a filesize limit. Please let me know if you would like the strace or if you would like me to test via any other method; I'd really like to get this resolved.
Could you try with hardware acceleration disabled. (Options > Advanced > General, then restart FF).
Loic, Thank you for the quick reply. Unfortunately, changing this option did not effect the test. What else can I try? Thank you!

Reproducible on the latest Nightly, on Ubuntu 12.04 64bit: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:19.0) Gecko/19.0 Firefox/19.0 (20121112030753) CPU usage didn't go as far up as for the reporter, but it did go up to 42-44% a few times (most times it stayed at 30-34% and 26%).

Nope, I should have closed this ages ago. Not on U12.04 anymore, but it was resolved even before I upgraded IIRC
