I did a search on my Inbox for "Sender is x". The search seemed to get into an infinite loop and didn't return results. I did the same search in 4.x and received the result in a few seconds. May 11th Build, POP Mail
Does this happen repeatedly? Your search was Sender Contains? What value for sender was it? Can you use sender contains search on the same inbox for other values? Were you indeed searching on the Inbox or the entire POP account? Did you click Stop or did it never finish on its own? Any info for reproducing this would be helpful. Sender contains search on POP account with may15 commercial trunk build, win98 works for me. If you're really using Sender with the operator IS as opposed to CONTAINS, you're probably hitting the bug where we're not reflecting accurate criteria choices on switching (main bug 60514).
Any more information for me on this one? If not, I'll be marking it worksforme.

Here is some additional information. I used the May 24th build and had the same bug. I did a search for "Subject contains SecureID" in my POP Inbox. After one minute I didn't see any results. I then tried this in 4.7x. The same search yielded one e-mail. Note that I have 5200 mails in my Inbox. Come by my desk on the 1st floor, building 21, if you want me to show this to you.

Is this message you searched for with SecureID appearing in your (current build) Inbox thread pane, i.e. can you see it in the mail window thread pane? Can you get successful search results on other searches initiated on this same Inbox with current build?

Just figured out what was wrong. When my Inbox was in the mail window pane thread I chose to search mail/news messages. The mail box that was automatically selected was "Inbox on roberts on NSmail-1". When I search on that mailbox no results are found and I appear to be in an infinite loop. However, I can choose "Inbox on Local Folders" and perform a search. It finds the items in my search criteria but the performance is quite poor. And, when I select the Local Mail folder from my hierarchical mail folder list the last part of the hierarchical menu (top item is Choose this Folder) is disjointed from the menu. Seems to be 3 issues a) doesn't select my Inbox from Local as the default 2) Hierarchical menu isn't connected 3) Performance
Removing dogfood keyword. About your 3 issues: 1. We should indeed select the default account as search scope if there is no selection when search is called. If a selection is made in Local Folders, we should default to that selected folder or if acct level, that selected account level "local folders". If I select a folder/Inbox or have a message selected in a folder/Inbox on Local Folders the launch search, it shows the selection as "folder/Inbox on Local Folders" as the search scope. If I select the acct level "Local Folders" and launch search it shows the account level "Local Folders" in the search scope. Is this not the case for you? 2. Disjointed hierarchical menus is bug 78409. 3. Performance is another issue -- we have some specific detailed performance bugs for certain scenarios, but if you feel strongly enough, log a separate performance bug about search. It is difficult to track meandering issues in one bug. Whenever possible, please try to keep it to one bug, one issue. Lastly, are you truly looping when searching your default Inbox or is it that it's just taking too long? Can you use the Stop button on the search? If you wait awhile do results or "no matches" text appear?

I cannot see that this bug still is actual. Should be closed?
