when i mount, iPhoto does immediately detect the phone and open to import screen.

however, it says there are no photos to be imported.
see also bug 794564.
With this AM repo sync, it works. I just tested. iPhoto '11.

Unlike my Android phone.

This is due to not following the standard camera file system organization:

but we do that properly now and I tested again this morning, this works.
