Steps to reproduce:

Downloaded the latest Java update.

Actual results:

Before showing my home page, a block on the blank screen showed:
Java Script Application. Error: Type of Error: netscape.security.PrivilegeManager is undefined. I have to click OK to get rid of this, before the correct homepage window opens.

Expected results:

That Java script application message should not have appeared. It does not appear when I use Internet Explorer as my browser.
Blocks: 757046
Discovered this is not just limited to startup. Every time I go to a new window for a new webpage, the same problem occurs.
I'm a little bit confused by your bug report.
To clarify things: Java has nothing to do with Javascript, only the names are similar.

You talk about Java first:
>Downloaded the latest Java update
Where, how and which version ?

>Java Script Application. Error: Type of Error: netscape.security.PrivilegeManager
and here you are talking about a Javascript error.
I can imagine that this may happen with a broken addon and Firefox17 but you are talking about Firefox10.

Can you please clarify your bug report ?

Do you get the error if you run Firefox in the Firefox safemode ?

Thanks Matthias. Senility setting in. Four things:
I am using Firefox 17.0.1 and yes, I get the message when I open Firefox in safe mode (clicking on the link you gave).

Secondly the button with the error message about javascript application does not actually prevent the window from opening - I have slow download speed and it takes a while to open sometimes. However, when the window opens, the bar is still there and needs to be physically closed by clicking the button

Third: when I open a link in a new window, the error bar appears again and has to be closed, but if I open a link in a new tab, it does not.

Lastly: I downloaded the latest Java today from Oracle corporation in a download called jre-7u9-windows-i586 sorry for confusion.

Just to confirm: the error message is [Java Script Application]. Error: Type of Error: netscape.security.PrivilegeManager is undefined.

Hope this helps. Thanks for your assistance.

Bob Scott.

Do you got the special safemode startup dialog ?
You are not in the safemode without this dialog.
The "netscape.security.PrivilegeManager" function has been removed and something tries to call this function. That can't be Firefox itself because everyone would get the popup and that is not the case.
That usually means that this is function is called by an addon or do you use a special homepage on the local disk ?
I didn't notice anything particular about the safe startup. I just clicked on the link. Will try again. Wait one pse.
OK Matthias. Went into safe mode and the error bar was NOT there. Currently have exited safe mode again.

I am closing down soon, so may not be able to answer your next message until tomorrow, but thanks again for your support. Bob.
You have an addon installed that is causing this issue.
Disable them in the addon manager one by one to find the one that is causing this issue.

type about:addons as URL in Firefox to open the addon manager and open in the extension section.

Contact the support under http://support.mozilla.org if you need further help/support.

Thank you. will do as you recommend. Bob.
Hi Matthias. Did as you suggested, got a long list of plugins. Disabled each one in turn with no result. Then saw something about BUG546848 Remove Support for enable privilege. That led me to something else where the AVG Security Tool bar plug in was said to be the cause. Had another go, disabled the AVG Security toolbar and took it off the screen using the View/Toolbars route and unchecked the toolbar. Hey Presto, problem solved. Many thanks. Wish I had seen the correspondence on the web earlier - could have saved us both a lot of time but thank you for your patience. Bob.
Great that your issue is now solved !
