From the SVG 1.1 specification [1]: [...] ‘[linear|radial]Gradient’ elements are available for referencing even when the ‘display’ property on the ‘[linear|radial]Gradient’ element or any of its ancestors is set to none. Unfortunately, Firefox *doesn't* ignore the display property, turning gradients outside 'defs' elements (read: mixed together with the rest of the graphics elements, within dynamic web applications) into a quite hard to handle beast... Not OK: Firefox 17.0.1 Nightly 20.0a1 (2012-12-17) OK: Chrome 23.0.1271.97 m IE 9.0.8112.16421 [1] http://www.w3.org/TR/SVG/pservers.html#Gradients
