As mentioned by Fabien Cazenave [:kaze] on bug 813689 comment 17 and which I agree on:

That's done by any other OS I have used so far which makes it really predictable for the user to stay in the 1 message limit. Minimizing a message without that counter visible is hard. Android for example shows it once you reach the 10 characters left limit.
